Marjorie Halloran - Trio Antarctica

about

Trio Antarctica, for violin, cello, and piano, was inspired by my 2012 trip to Antarctica, where I was awestruck by the beauty and power of the expanse of space untouched by humans. It was especially moving when we witnessed the calving of glaciers and observed the distinct lack of sea ice in some areas due to global warming. The continent of Antarctica is a thus-far-unspoiled place on the earth that has some of the most unpredictable and dangerous conditions on earth; nowhere is there a better example of how nature will have the final say and humans are merely along for the ride. While I was there, I was spellbound by the vastness and stillness of nature, and I wanted the music to reflect the time I spent quietly observing the beauty. I was also quite amused by the playfulness of the colonies of penguins, and I incorporated a “playful” section in my piece as well. Trio Antarctica is intended to paint a snapshot of the splendor of the land, as it would be impossible to capture the essence of the entire continent in a mere piece of mortal music. The piece takes the listener on an ocean voyage to the continent-- from a tumultuous sail through the Drake Passage to sailing away into the sunset on the mirror-still water.
